Addiction Counsellors of Ireland Responds to CORU Consultation on Standards
We have formally submitted our evidence-informed response to CORU’s national consultation on the Standards of Proficiency for Counsellors & Psychotherapists and the Criteria for Education and Training Programmes (2025).
As Ireland’s leading accrediting body for addiction professionals, ACI engaged in this consultation to ensure that:
-
The expertise and perspective of addiction specialists are represented in national standards.
-
The unique skills, knowledge, and challenges of addiction counselling are acknowledged.
-
Future regulation supports safe, ethical, and high-quality care for people affected by addiction.
Our submission sets out seven recommendations across four key domains: Personal Development, Clinical Supervision, Scope of Practice, and Clinical Placements, with particular emphasis on personal development and structured clinical supervision. We welcome the opportunity to continue contributing to this important national initiative and remain committed to ongoing engagement with CORU to ensure standards reflect the realities of professional practice.
